Spectroscope Lab |
This is not a formal lab
report but it must be typed . Your lab report will consist of three
sections: Results, Discussion and Questions.
The lab report must be typed using a 12 point font. Reports not typed will lose points. All parts to report must be typed with
correct formatting. No excuses.
Cursive or ornate fonts are not acceptable.
Be careful with spelling and grammar.
Poor spelling and grammar detract from a reader’s overall impression
of the report. Spelling and grammar
errors will lose one point each. Your report will be graded
out of thirty points possible as follows: |
Results.
(10 points) This section should include your results: Describe the construction
of your spectroscope. Describe the spectra
generated by your spectroscope with the three different gas generation tubes. |
Discussion (10 points): Describe how you think your
spectroscope could be improved. |
Questions.
(10 points – 2 points per
question) Answer the following five questions: 1. What was the first element identified
with a spectroscope? 2. What wavelength of light will be
produced by an n=3 to n=2 transition in a hydrogen atom and what color will
this light be. 3. What is a diffraction grating? 4. What is the difference between a
spectrophotometer and a spectrometer (spectroscope) 5. Wood often burns with a yellow
flame. Why? |
Appearance, Spelling and Grammar More than one spelling error and you will lose a
point. For major grammar errors
(sentence fragments, run-on sentences, comma splices, etc.), you will lose a
point. You will lose points for
appearance if you incorporate non-typed material into your report or if you
use non-standard paper (e.g. notebook paper) in your report. |
